General Information:
- Program re-opened in 2006 (CB has completed over 70 adoptions)
Considerations:
- One trip of up to 4 weeks required (depending on child’s province of birth).
- Mandatory post placement reports - first 3 years, reports every 6 months and yearly thereafter until child reaches 18 years of age.
- The children range from 6 12 months at referral.
Children in need of families due to economic distress and/or single parenthood.
- Majority of the children live in orphanages, some in foster care.
- Both boys and girls are waiting for families and are typically under 12 months at referral.
- Families should be open to either gender.
- Some birth family information may be available.
Requirements:
- Applicant must be 20 years older than the child placed with them.
- Single applicants over 50 must be prepared to accept the referral of a child over the age of 2.
- Prefer married couples but will accept single applicants.
- No same sex couples applications will be accepted.
- No serious physical or emotional disabilities that could affect parenting.
- No criminal record.
- At least one of a couple MUST be a Canadian citizen.
Process:
- Completion of a home study and approval in province.
- Interpol clearances will stale date after one (1) year, VN medicals and financial documents will stale date after six (6) months while they are in VN. However, once these documents reach the desk of the IAO they will not stale date.
- File notarized by The Children's Bridge and sent to Vietnam where the translation and file completion takes place.
- Family must travel to Vietnam to complete the adoption.
Timelines:
- Home study completion varies (average time 3 4 months).
- Approval in province takes between 4 - 12 weeks.
- Family matched to a child approximately 9 12 months after file received in Vietnam and travel within 30 days.
